This track comes from a guest-star, Arizona's very own Tek, who's part of the Micro.Spy DJ/live-act collective, and it's an absolutely firing jungle track with multi-layered guitars, vocal hits, and a real original stylee putting it somewhere between the oldskool jump-up and the 'brand' new junglefunk styles, but over and above them. New perspectives on breakbeats from the land of the original funky drummer, that's what we like to see :)

After the unexpected and tragic loss of Andi Horvath, aka Ramone/Mono, of a sudden heart failure in June (tribute page here ), we at Monotonik+friends were contacted by his friends at Fruitz Of Dojo (the Mac demo-scene group he was a member of) with a number of great unreleased Ramone .XM tracks (playable in WinAmp) which had been composed, in the months before he passed away, for both a demo ('Fistful Of Dojo') and a 'chip' music-disc ('SuperSIDekick Sessions'). So, we're proud to present...

After being vaguely dormant for some time, Mono211,the sister, much more hiphop-influenced breakz+beatslabel to Monotonik, returns, with this rather cutetune from Helsinki, Finland native Substance. Substance (who also releases on Monotonik as Kuu),has crafted a smartly oldskool track from an acidbassline, loping drums, and some lovely scratchyhits and vocal samples. Put the needle on the recordand check it, s'il vous plait..

Arizona's majestic Micro.Spy collective, including Tek, who produced one of the classic early m211 mp3 tracks in "Benedict", come right back at us with "Flimflam", and boy, does this one kick up a storm? Just listen to the wicked breakbeat style - this is the kind of release mono211 would like to think would characterise its style, going forward - that and the natty Squarepusher-ish jazz-jam, which you'll see a lot of in forthcoming releases.. cool!

We return with a beautifully produced track from Ramone and his German studio partner, Trigger (who has recently been responsible for remixing Jeru Tha Damaja's "Ya Playing Yaself" for DMC Records, amongst other things.) This time it's a chill-out track that was briefly considered for the credits music on the Playstation title Mono211 have done the soundtrack for. But thankfully for you guys, it's now a m211 mp3 release, and you get to hear the distinctive blunted Ramone style given a...

A little more unexpectedness, perhaps, in the form of this rather immaculate release from Vom. And who, exactly, might he be? Well, Vom is the drone-rock-noise alter-ego of UK Monotonik artist Vim!.. So rest assured, we haven't mis-spelt anything, it's just the usual Monotonik noise, but from an unusual angle.. and with double helpings of static. And how to describe this release? Well.. it's a trip. We travel from the serene ambience of ages, through the pixelated crowd, straight on through the...

Continuing on the Mono211 (breaks+eclectic) side-label odyssey, we come across French hiphop instru-mentalist Willbe (last seen as one of the winners of the Laurent Garnier remix competition, getting his mix pressed up onto limited vinyl by F Communications!), who's kindly slung us this scratchadelic tribute to Mono211, who are indeed back, back, back. So, with the help of super-scratcher Sear, this headnodder loops up pianos, rock-solid beats, and strings with super nimble scratching skills...

Round, and round, and round he goes. And where he stops, nobody knows. Another king-of-secrets artist delivers a freaky slab of funk that kicks somewhere between Squarepusher, Funki Porcini, and someone else we can't quite place. That's right, sportsfans, the steel drum, the jazz percussion, the weird-as-heck instrumentation, the cowbell, for pity's sake! Does none of this make any sense? Probably not, but it's nice notsense.

Another release from Australia's darling, and no, we don't mean Dame Edna, rather Super Science, whose Surgery Records album, "Love Like Life In Miniature", is a Gulliver-like masterpiece of melody, vocals, and beautifully fractured beats - as we've said before, something with the crossover appeal and unique angle of an artist like Capitol K. Just feel real. Mono211 kicks back into the realm of the seriously chilled for this beguiling piece of ambient, with the faintest of triphop breaks in it, courtesy of Finnish junglist Prob. Mm, the beautifully serene chords mixed with just the dreamiest acoustic break put this somewhere around the most ethereal end of Global Communication, with further nods to Pete Namlook and Dr.Motte on a less electronic tip. As Mixmaster Morris might ask, is it tomorrow already?

Showing that he can still put out rolling breakbeats with the best of them, this Hoffman release showcases the kind of marvellous funky breaks that led De:Bug magazine in Germany to call us 'the Ninja Tune of the Net'. Mind you, this time round, 'Dark Fool' is somewhere between BT-esque progressive breakbeat, harder techno, and Incredible Bongo Band-style freestyling. Definitions are always on the tricky side, but rest assured you've got a treat in for you.

When the clamoring for a relaunch of Mono211 died down, we released that we'd been concentrating a little too much on the downbeat, abstract side of things, and it was good to open up with some _real_ kickin' stuff on our breakbeat break-beast of a sublabel. So here we are, and the first release sees English jazz-ster, Smash, as remixed by talented French instrumental hiphop-meister, Willbe, _THEN_ remixed by the mercurial Hoffman, who's been with Mono right from the start, even part of our...

Having previously churned up our oldskool .MOD treats into a swirly mix for us with his 'Mono BPM' set, and also 'possibly' behind some naughty bootleg Monotonik compilations floating around file-sharing servers worldwide, US-based Luminfire sent us this languidly individualistic original composition. It made us go 'oo'. So we released it. Neat. But more with the specifics, guv'nor? Well, "Bananadittydub" is a vibraphone-encrusted gem of a track which strangely recalls DJ Shadow in...

There's still time to introduce new artists we think are rather spiffing here, and Finland's Lindon would be one of those. "Eksajoule" is a driftingly backed rhythmic idm treat, with mini-drum-fireworks lit every few seconds and a backing lilt which is truly beautiful. Some more of that more melodic idm that we like so much chez Monotonik? We fear so.

This release comes from Finnish musician Substance, who provides us with a hard, filtered d+b track with an evil agenda to make your feet tap. But there's lots of hidden subtlety, both in rhythm and texture, which emerges the more you listen to it. somewhere towards the Bristol d+b sound but tending to echo a less filtered Optical-styled sound, this is the sound of jungle getting lean, mean, and moody just in time for the new millenium.

So we kick it with trademark retro melodies in "4-Bit Xmas" and then do some warped Arfur Daley-sampling breakwizardry with "Wakey Wakey Wales - It's Christmas!" If only Yuletide could always be as warped as this.

A return visit to Monotonik from New Zealand-based artist Aquaboogie, and again his very distinctive, almost dreamily spaced-out electronics surface from the Antipodean haze. First up, "Little Star" brings a kinda Isan-ish calm and simplicity to an ambient haze of a track, with angelic, metallic, computer-generated lullaby over the top of some delightfully re-focusing strings. Then, "Insecure Robot" brings another Adams-ian piece of whimsy to life, whether intentionally or...

Though we've admired his work on the net.label Inpuj, plus current/forthcoming real.life releases on Merck and Saundart, we haven't had a chance to put out anything from US idm.artist Proswell.. until now, that is. But "0EO", possibly named after a certain chip-tune related tracker-based command which you can hear used on the track, is a really enchanting piece of intelligently puttering idm-ness, again, sorta indescribable in its multiple layering and soaring subtle sounds, but a...

To coincide with the release of the long-awaited Aural Industries CD, "Thug:Remixed" (go to their page for info on how to order!), us here @ Monotonik are proud to release a 3-track sampler with a taste of the re-interpretations of Tim Koch/ Thug [Defocus, AI, Surgery] available on the disc itself. Although the CD contains remixes by a whole bunch of other supercool idm types (Pimmon, Aspen, Superscience, Octopus Inc, Sense, and more!), we picked three of the most intriguing to put...

We're delighted to put out another release from West Coast US breakbeast, Darkhalo, with whom we released a rather well-received .MOD a while back. We loved his sorta progressive vs. nu-skool, distinctively Californian rolling beats, obviously born outta the City of Industry, and all the yummier for that. Therefore, "Stratosphere Sniper" is another prime example of the CA massive blowing things up for smarts, and we've been mentally grooving (we're too dorky to dance) pretty much all...

Having previously been associated with Substance's excellent net.mod.label Voodoo, Finnish musician Tweeter comes out with his debut for Monotonik, and it's a real treat. "Me And My Friend Lobstah" is a sinewave-smooth electronic trip with boil+bubble drums and widening echo-styled passages leading out to the fill-out, the breakdown, the true wide-screen style. It's strangely reminiscent of an earlier era, the early 90s, but in the best possible way - not retro, just as good as the...

From quite literally out of nowhere comes this lush, beautiful 'triphop' (although that's probably an over-used phrase) track from the excellent Vinyl Matt. A choice sample (that soundtrack fans may or may not recognise), all underpinned by some gorgeously halfspeed drums and drifty crunchiness, means perfect music for relaxing in the land where time stands still. Hopefully we'll be hearing more from the mysterious Vinyl Matt soon, but in the meantime, enjoy the first fruits of his labour.

After his first release as Pendle on our sister label, Mono211, the UK-based former Butterfly Child bandmember and now TV/film/advert soundtracker returns on Monotonik via his Idmonster pseudonym (id? idm? definitely monstrous!) And it's not just a slight return, either. "The Force May Be With You" is a truly divine track, starting in a sea of disembodied voice fragments and cosmic chord co-location, before adding layer on layer of pastoral strings, theremin (?), and jittering that...

Continuing the tradition of good but unclassifiable music on Mono211, and relishing the chance to break things up somewhat from the idm+bleep action that's our normal path, the US artist known as Luminfire, who's mixed up oldskool Mono .MOD action for us in the past, gives us an EP which meshes nicely with recent Mono211 releases like Braces Tower, but very much toes its own sunny, jazzy line too. When we hear "Kudremukh Environmental EP", we think.. recent Ninja Tune artists like...

We're delighted to present another release from the divine UK-er and ex-Butterfly Child dream-pop-ster, Pendle, in his cheeky Idmonster alias. With recent Idmonster material on real-world compilations from Neo-Ouija and Notype, people seem to really dig his smooth, truly serene style, which he puts to good use composing soundtracks for a diverse range of TV documentaries in the UK. And we treasure the 'Monster too :) His latest track, "Low Flying Planes", is magisterially ethereal. It...

Monotonik is delighted to welcome the return of the plastic inevitable, hewn from solid nostalgia, Vim! :) As always, beavering away with his very own carefully skewed musical style, he serves up these 3 vignettes as the "Timecrunch EP". The lead-off track, "Thin Strips Of You", hovers majestically in 3d.space before skittering around a retrig.forest, whereas "Jackie Batey" plays off the evocative arpegiating of classic Vim! with some subtle melodies - all too...

Just to mix things up a bit, and to prove that Mono211 itself isn't entirely dead in its guise as our breaks/freestylin' sublabel, we're proud to present another track from the recently elusive DJ Hoffman. He's still hiding out in the South-West of England and providing us with dangerously good, dangerously unclassifiable breakbeat-ish tunes which help us hark back to the classic, more beat-leaden days of Mono .MODs which he was a big part of under his Dreamfish pseudonym :)This time round,...

Another of those musicians whose work we've known for a long time, and now finally have a chance to put out, Australia's Epoq has been around ever since his contribution to the Surgery's excellent "Initial Release" compilation a year or two back. And now, with net.releases from online labels like Kahvi, Quanta, and Corewatch, and his debut "Scintilla" CD just released, also on Surgery, we're proud to present the lead-off track from that album, "Simpel". So, what to...

This is something very different from Hoffman - very difficult to describe, it sorta brings a different perspective to Monotonik. Skittering but solid beats, a simplicity which belies its complexity, this is techno, but not as we know it, Jim. Like a softer version of the kind of hard techno favoured by Jeff Mills and The Advent, perhaps, it wanders and phases but keeps up the 4/4 beats, ticking over above all. Sparkling and rough all at once, categorise this at your peril.

A debut of sorts and a comeback in other ways, as a mysterious Finnish artist called (for the purposes of this release) Please Annihilate Oulu gives us two starkly contrasting tracks. To start things off right, "Copyplate" is a truly virtuoso piece of freejazz vs. drill+bass vs. whoknows, and is quite unlike anything out there right now. Don't worship the glitch, worship the crazy itch. On the other hand, "Lissabon", from a couple of years back, is a calmly authoritative...

As a taster for the one-off and assuredly rather special forthcoming album, Monotonik is proud to present the final recordings of UK artist Binary. Formerly signed to Planet Noisebox, and receptor of rave reviews in the NME for the 'awkward gracefulness' of the 'Music Of Sound' 10" and 'Brick Wall Music' album, Binary has now decided to leave the music industry altogether. his final album, 'Binatone', will be released through Monotonik, so everyone can enjoy his pithy blend of...

We're very proud to present the first Mono211 release from UK musician Pendle, who's also known as Idmonster for his more idm-ish, _reallysmart_ forthcoming releases on Monotonik. But who is this Pendle wallah? Well, having formerly been a member of the excellent dream-pop band, Butterfly Child, who were major-label signed in the early 90s, Pendle then went his own way, working on projects as diverse as working with Laurie Anderson, conducting a German birdsong symphony (?!), and soundtracking...

A new EP from a brand new artist, Icelandic bringer of non-tranquility Vektrex, and whilst "Jacket From Planet Pluto" is an eloquent electro-ish track with a sneaky 'masters-of-triphop' sample and urgent, clicking percussion, the crazed beeps of "Perfect Pitch" bring to mind a NES game gone horribly, horribly wrong. Timestretching chip-chords and pitchbending sinewaves? Yikes, call the Game Genie right now!

It's always a pleasure to introduce someone new onto Monotonik, and in this case, it's German composer and DJ, Crashkid, who brings a more organic, acoustic edge to our sound with this 2-track EP. "Stair" is almost hiphop-like in its rhythmically shuffling beats, but with structured guitar overlays and subtle phrasing, you can see why Crashkid counts My Bloody Valentine alongside more conventional electronica as some of his main influences. The second half of the EP,...

As a perfect pre-Christmas release, we have this glacial but soulful debut from Canadian artist Vizion , who is primarily known for forming the net.labels Ronin Collective and Camomille , but also has upcoming material on the real-life label Wikkid Records , home of David Kristian and others. In any case, "Autumnstillness Deadwinter" grabbed our attention with its sweet mix of guitar and gently meandering bass, with chattering percussion underscoring the whole serene scene. It's an...

Nowadays, Mosaik's Jakob Svanholm, aka Radix/Tpolm from his demo-scene days, is on a musical hiatus, as far as we know - apart from classical guitar pieces, that is. But we here at Monotonik have been so enchanted by his tracks as Mosaik that we've been slowly releasing them over the past year or two. This track, "Sunreal", is the culmination of that music, and hopefully we'll be hearing brand new material from Mosaik soon, but in the meantime.. believe us, this more than suffices....

It's interesting that Mono211 was originally meant to be the 'main label' that us here at Monotonik released music on. This was mainly because we were known in our early .MOD days for being eclectic, unclassifiable genre jumpers, and we wanted to carry that tradition on. But in the end, we found our love of idm+videogamebleep action on Monotonik took front stage (and rightly so!) But most of all, we found that there's just not that many artists making good but 'unclassifiable' music that really...
